Commercial roof drains need regular cleaning to keep them clear of debris and blockage. Plan on cleaning every three months in the spring and summer, but up it to every month in the fall and winter. To clean your drain, you’ll need:
- The correct tools to open the drain (depends on the type of drain).
- A flashlight.
- A pipe brush.
- A plumber’s snake.
- A hose.
- A broom.
1. Clean Up the Surrounding Area
Once you’re on the roof, clean up any dirt, weeds and debris that may be around the drain. This will prevent any more debris from flowing into the drain while cleaning it.
2. Inspect the Drain
Remove the roof drain dome according to manufacturer instructions. Next, inspect the severity of the clog. You may need to shine your flashlight down the drain to see if there is any debris blocking the outlet or piping.
3. Unclog the Drain
If possible, remove any blockage from the drain using your hand. Avoid reaching down the drain too far and getting your hand stuck. Pour some water down the drain to determine if and to what extent the drain is still clogged.
If needed, use the pipe snake, and push and pull it through the drain until you clear the remaining blockage.
4. Clean the Drain
With the clog cleared, use the pipe brush to remove any remaining light debris or build-up on the sides of the drain. Next, run the hose to flush out any remaining debris.
Finish up by reattaching the drain dome.
